Gdynia is the youngest of the TriCity sisters (TriCity: Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot).
Until 1921 it was a tiny Kashubian fishing village. The decision to construct a great seaport of Gdynia was taken in order to make Poland independent of the Free City of Gdansk's maritime services. The port developed along with the town for the subsequent fifteen years. It was the greatest achievement of the inter - war Poland, in the years 1924 - 1939. In September 1939 the town could boast a modern harbor with fully equipped hinterland. After the Second World War the damages were quickly repaired and the harbor continued to grow together with the ship - building industry. Today Gdynia has taken on the role of a trading center.
