Sopot's history is much less turbulent that of Gdansk. This town has a color of its own, too. It has been both a holiday center and a spa since the turn of the 19thcentury. It has preserved a number of original buildings. Sanatoria, hotels and boarding houses have found a perfect setting among the green park areas. Sopot's five hundred meters long wooden pier is well worth a stroll. Sopot hosts a number of various events including sailing races, tennis tournaments, horse races, and the world wide famous International Song Festival organized in the green scenery of the Forest Opera. Night life of many splendid cafes, night clubs and gambling centers including one Europe's oldest "Casino Sopot" (situated in Grand Hotel) create the atmosphere of the place recognized as the Riviera of the North. |
